Jeff Platz
guitarist, composer
Jeff Platz is an American guitarist, improviser and composer known for a distinctive style of music that bridges the raw energy of his punk rock origins with the intricate textures of modern jazz and improvised music. Based in the Northeast, he is a central figure in the Providence, Boston, and New York improvised music scenes. He has played and recorded with several prominent U.S. based musicians including Joe Morris, Daniel Carter, Stephen Haynes, Tony Malaby, and Michael Attias. Platz tours and records frequently in Europe, and Latin America. In Germany he has recorded and performed with various ensembles including Modern Primitive featuring bassist Meinrad Kneer, Jan Klare and Bill Elgart. Currently he works with Portuguese drummer Vasco Furtado and Colombian tenor saxophonist Pacho Davila in the trio Incoming. The group's latest recording is on the Phonogram Unit record label. In Mexico City, Platz has established a presence through performances at many experimental music events, including the 13 Muestra de Música Radical festival and the FIME Festival in Santiago de Queretaro Mexico. His approach to the instrument often involves collaborative improvisation, a style that has seen him record for various international jazz labels such as Skycap, Evil Rabbit, and Setola di Maiale. Platz also cohosts a yearly improvised music festival based in Muenster Germany, Runde Ecken which features two days of improvised music ensembles and solo artists. Platz has worked with modern composers including Christian Wolff and Raven Chacon. Platz performed the Christian Wolff composition Edges, under the direction of Christian Wolff, with Steven Drury’s Callithumpian ensemble at New England Conservatory of Music in the spring of 2025. Additionally Platz performed Raven Chacon's piece, Compass, for solo electric guitar at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston Massachusetts as part of the museum's An Indigenous Present, working directly with the composer Raven Chacon. Platz’s approach to the guitar is defined by a focus on tonal exploration and extended techniques. His work frequently moves between gentle, melodic passages and harsh, experimental soundscapes, earning praise from publications like Downbeat magazine for the high-energy, "on fire" performances of his solo work and ensembles.
